Sign and Return

I will be sober in another life
But not this one.
In this life I will live like all great
Poets.
Film writes.
Shamans that missed the call to enlightenment before ease.

I will be all the things I dreamed
In another life.
I will never count pennies and only make strong stable choices.
In this life I make deals with the Devil
Nothing in disbelief.
Sign my name and pray to God.

My daughter points at the moon
And my eyes are just as big.
She sleeps and I sign
Legal papers.
Bounced checks.
My name that shouldn’t be my name anymore.
Long into the night I hear the raven caw.
Here to witness my grief.

The next life I will be wise
But in this one I will be raw.
